Twinning - Nolay Bulletin 2014

We have found the excellent Nolay information site including the new look "Bulletin"

Anyone wanting to improve their vocabulary will find this interesting, and note that Nolay has been asked to merge with a neighbouring municipality after their March elections. So perhaps our being asked to "rationalise" our parish boundaries with Benson is actually part of an EU campaign from on high.

Twinning - present and future

How would you like our twinning arrangement with Nolay to proceed?

As reported in the August/September edition of the Ewelme News, a small group of us enjoyed another visit to Nolay over the Spring Bank holiday this year. As usual our hosts were very hospitable and we all appreciated the wonderful food, drink and activities provided. In view of the small numbers participating, we are wondering what to do about the future of our twinning relationship. Do you have any views on this?

Judith Spence has recently had very encouraging contacts with an English teacher at the Nolay school who wants to bring some 13/14/15 year-olds to Ewelme in 2015.  So we need to find hosts for these young people and their supervisors. Would you be interested in hosting someone?

We also need to raise some money to spend on entertaining them. We are always extremely well looked after in Nolay and here we receive no public funding. When the twinning first started we held an Auction of Promises which raised over £1000 which was a large sum then and it has kept us going well since. But there is little left now. What sort of fundraising activity would you like to have in Ewelme? We have a big bottle of wine from our recent visit to share with you!

We really would like some feedback from Ewelme residents on the how we should proceed. So if you have any answers to the questions raised here or any other comments on our twinning visits or other activities please drop me a line at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 1 Lower End. Or phone me on 01491 835631. Thank you in anticipation! Sue Cooper

We have added some photos to record the opening of "rue de Ewelme" and celebrate our own "Nolay Close". Look under Galleries for Gallery 5, and check out the link to Nolay's Tourist Office website.

Nolay Twinning

Ewelme is twinned with Nolay, in Burgundy, France. Situated to the southwest of Dijon and Beaune in the southern part of the Cote d'Or, this attractive little town is important in the wine industry.

"En Bourgogne, on mange souvent et on mange bien" goes the saying in that area and this sums it up very well. With the superb wines produced there, the interesting countryside and the wonderful hospitality we receive, Nolay is an inviting destination.

Exchange visits are arranged on an alternating basis.

Our next trip to Nolay is being planned for 2013 and details will be circulated in due course.

Meanwhile, please see Sue Hill in Derry's Den in Benson if you are interested.
