A feast of fun at Ewelme Primary School

Children of Ewelme School and the wider village community thoroughly enjoyed a feast of events over Food and Farming Fortnight (24th September – 7th October). A wealth of activities began with all children enjoying a healthy lunch of roast turkey, pasta, vegetables and jam sponge and custard, which was prepared, cooked and served by the whole school for the whole school.

A week on, children cooked again, this time for the wider community of Ewelme and to raise money for charity. All year groups, over the course of the morning, prepared and cooked a menu of leek and vegetable soup or bacon and cheese quiche with salad and fruit crumble for dessert. Year 5 and 6 children did an excellent job of serving the lunch to a jam-packed village hall and enjoyed chatting to locals, raising £323 for Christian Aid.

Finally, harvest celebrations concluded with a Harvest Service in the church where family members watched singing and drama performances from Class 1 children, who had also made a scarecrow, poetry from Class 2 and Class 3, and a presentation on Fairtrade food produce with accompanying artwork from Class 4. Songs were sung and prayers and blessings were said as generous gifts of foodstuff surrounded the altar.

Older children in the school have thoroughly embraced the idea of Fairtrade and have pioneered a Fairtrade Steering Group to establish initiatives for school to promote Fairtrade. Ideas include the possibility of setting up a Fairtrade produce after-school tuck-shop. Watch this space!
